UCATT was saddened to hear about the death of veteran housing campaigner Alan Walter, who died suddenly on Saturday 7th March.
Alan worked tirelessly for Defend Council Housing, campaigning for councils to be allowed to build homes, defending tenants’ rights, and pressing for all repairs to be properly funded so that tenants could live with dignity in decent homes.
UCATT general secretary Alan Ritchie said “Alan Walter’s death is a great loss to all those who believe in the ideals of council housing and who know the necessity of a proper council house building programme to provide jobs and ensure that the millions of people in desperate need of a home are housed.”
Mr Ritchie added: “The most fitting tribute that could now be paid to Alan is for the government to accept the justice of the cause he has campaigned for for so long and order a massive programme of new council house building and repairs”
