UCATT and UNITE have both secured a yes vote for industrial action in the local government pay dispute involving craft workers.
Following the ballot results, representatives from the two unions have met local government employers on several occasions. Dialogue is ongoing in an attempt to reach an agreement.
The dispute involves 25,000 local government craft workers employed under the “Red Book” agreement. They include carpenters, bricklayers, painters, labourers, electricians and plumbers.
The ballots were called after employers offered a pay rise of 2.45 per cent, with strings attached.
Alan Ritchie, General Secretary of construction union UCATT and secretary of the trade union side, said: “We are committed to meeting the employers wherever and whenever to try to break the deadlock.”
John Allott, National Officer for UNITE and the chair of the trade union side, said: “The employers must now address the craft specific issues which we have tabled. This is in the interests of all parties.”
