UCATT Unites Around Agreement On Olympics and All Major Projects

On the first day of their National Delegate Conference in Perth construction union UCATT have overwhelmingly voted to strengthen their policies on the Olympics and all current and future major projects.

Conference supported a wide ranging composite, which  reaffirmed UCATT’s total commitment to direct employment on the Olympics and all other major publicly funded projects. Conference also decided that all negotiations on the Olympics would be led by Alan Ritchie the union’s General Secretary and UCATT’s Executive Council.

Speaking in the debate Alan Ritchie, reiterated that UCATT would not have signed up to the Memorandum of Agreement unless the Executive Council thought that it was a strong agreement, that was in the best interests of construction workers and would deliver direct employment.

Mr  Ritchie also made it clear that if construction bosses were not prepared to also honour the agreement, then UCATT would consider detaching themselves from the Memorandum of Agreement.

In a lively debate delegates from all areas of Britain made it clear that they believed that the Olympics was of relevance to the whole country as workers on the project would be drawn from all parts of the country and abroad to work on the project.

In a separate motion the conference overwhelmingly backed a call that in future agreements on all major agreements worth over £500 million must be cleared by the General Secretary and the Executive Council.
