It is with deep regret the
Albert William was born in 1927 and his career as a Trade Union Representative began when he was appointed as a Branch Secretary of the Bricklayers Union, the Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers. He subsequently became District Committee Member and then a member of the Executive of the Bricklayers Union. When the AUBTW later merged to form the Union of Construction, Allied Trade and Technicians, Albert became an Executive Council Member of the new
Albert played a very important role within the Trade Union and Labour Movements. His name would go down in history as a crusader for construction workers and for his attempts to rid the Construction Industry of cowboy builders. He was the instigator of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme. Albert’s tenure as General Secretary coincided with the Thatcher era, when numerous anti-trade union legislation were introduced by the then Tory Government, but he faced these challenges admirably and as a true and resolute trade unionists. A very approachable and likeable fellow, Albert will be missed by all who knew him.
