Introduction

As the UK’s only trade union specialising in construction, UCATT is at the forefront of negotiations concerning your pay, terms and conditions of employment with your employer in all the main agreements covering the construction industry.

The Construction Industry Joint Council agreement sets rates of pay for around 600,000 construction workers on the country’s major building and infrastructure sites. The agreement sets standards for the industry on pay and conditions. UCATT also represents members in a number of other allied trades to the construction industry such as Refractory Users and Steeplejack and Lightning Conductors and the Demolition Industry.

Rate with effect from Monday 30 June 2008
If an apprentice is in the second year of training and aged 22 or over then the national minimum wage must apply. Currently the national minimum wage for an adult worker is £5.52 per hour and from 1 October 2008 is £5.73 per hour.
 
Conditions

An apprentice who has entered into a training service agreement is subject to the same conditions of employment as other operatives employed under the Working Rule Agreement.

Payment during off-the-job training

Apprentices are entitled to be paid during normal working hours to attend approved courses off-the-job training in accordance with the requirement of their apprenticeship. Payment during such attendance shall be at their normal rate of pay, but the employer may withhold payment for hours during which an apprentice, without authorization fails to attend the course.

Overtime

The working of overtime by apprentices under 18 years of age shall not be permitted. Where an apprentice age 18 or over is required to work overtime payment shall be in accordance with the provisions of the Working Rule Agreement.
