With the continuing boom within the Construction Industry and building Employers failure to train Apprentices – the Employers’ remedy is to bring in Migrant Workers. Often these workers are open to the most blatant abuses…….long hours, low wages and “rip-off” accommodation charges being the most common. The North West Region is campaigning for legislation to include Construction within the recent Gangmasters Bill; contacting MPs to raise this question in Parliament as well as moving and securing a Resolution to this effect at the North West TUC Annual Conference.
Failure to act, in support of Migrant Workers, will result in lower wages and inferior terms & conditions for all Construction Workers.

UCATT has a policy of partnership and co-operation with employers on health and safety matters. Click here to read the Worker Engagement in the Construction Industry Report to see how a fundamental cultural change in the way employers and operatives engage each other can improve health and safety.

With the Government’s announcement to increase the minimum holiday entitlement by 4 days from October this year and a further 4 days from April 2009 - UCATT, North West Region, is to re-launch its Holiday Pay Campaign.
Many Construction Workers are still unaware that they may be entitled to paid leave – currently 20 days per year. With the increase, this can amount to – on average - £2,500.00 per year.
August 2007 will see the introduction of a new regional leaflet outlining Construction Workers’ entitlement under Health and Safety Legislation and the Working Time Regulations.
